The block should be 12.5 inches unfinished, made up of (4) 6.5" blocks. Each 6.5" block includes (3) quarter-circles with bright solids. The 4th and outside (background) circle should be low-volume white or off-white. The 4 blocks should be sewn together into a 12.5" block. The radius of the bright fabric circle should be approximately 5". You can use the same or different low-volume background fabric within each 12.5" block.

Note: One raffle ticket will be given for each block entered with a maximum of 5 tickets per person. More than 5 blocks however can be contributed, of course!
Granny Square Block
presented by Rachel R.
Block due in March
Color Choices: For color rings use any rainbow colors (similar to those pictured in the tutorial). Avoid browns/blacks/greys. Also avoid anything too low volume so that the colors pop against the white background. For background use Kona white.
Quick tip from Rachel: Blocks should finish to 9 1/8 - 9 1/4 inches after trimming. Once all the strips are made, I had best results if I pressed seams outward as I sewed strips together rather than sewing all strips together and pressing everything at the end.
The design ideas for the 2019 Cambridge CMQG charity challenge are due in one week, on June 20th! Please take some time to work up any ideas you have. Remember, block designs that are friendly to all skill level are ideal.
The theme is TEXT, the colors are black/white/grays. Check out the full design constraints here:
Color requirements: 1. One of your fabrics should be a bright spring green. 2. One of your fabrics should be blue (any shade.)
Size: Any of the options in the tutorial can be used. Blocks should be 11.5" unfinished.
I recommend cutting your outer most strip quarter inch wider than listed, and then trimming to 12" after adding the outer most strip.
Due: March Monthly Meeting
Note: One raffle ticket will be given for each block entered with a maximum of 5 tickets per person. More than 5 block however can be contributed, of course!
WINTER COLOR CHALLENGE
You now have 6 FQs of fabric. Two of your given color, two complementary to your given color, and one analogous color on each side of your given color.
If you weren't able to make the meeting you can still play along: 1. pick ONE color as your given color and select two FQs (for example, I select blue as my given color and select solids or prints that do not have additional colors in them) 2. using the color wheel as a reference, pick two FQs of a complementary color (for example, if blue is my given color, orange will be my complementary color) 3. select one of each analogous color on each side of your given color (for example, if blue is my given color, my analogous colors are green and purple)
The most important rules is that you use ALL of the colors you received during the swap. This is a color theory challenge so we would like to see what you do with your complementary and analogous colors. Please keep a swatch of the original fabrics to show us when you present your finished piece so we can see how you transformed your selections (and to see what you swapped out if you decide to...see below for more info.) It is acceptable to add a small amount of neutrals to your piece, but your work must have at least 75% of the colors you received. You do not have use equal amounts of the color, but they all must be used. You can swap out prints if you don’t like what you received, but they must be the SAME color, tone, intensity, etc. as the prints you received. If you only received prints and only want to work in solids or batiks, that is fine as long as they are the same color as what you received.
The finished project will be due at the April meeting and will need to be bigger than or equal to a 6 x 6” piece, it must be SEWN, QUILTED, and FINISHED to be eligible for a prize. Potential projects could be : zipper pouch, pillow, table runner, placemat, project bag, tote bag, handbag, quilt, etc. All finished entries will be eligible to win one of three prizes.
Make sure to HAVE FUN! We can't wait to see what you make!
